3 Must-Know Dance Moves to Warm Up Before a Race

Sure, stretching your hamstrings before you run is a great idea, it’s probably even recommended by that trainer at the gym who benches 220. But it’s not very fun. Throwing down a few stunning dance moves is a great way to warm up muscles, dispel nerves, and impress/surprise your friends.

You don’t have to have moves like Jagger to enjoy the benefits of a dancing warm-up at Color Me Rad 5K. It’s all about having a great time. Whether you grew up doing The Moonwalk, The Robot, or The Single Ladies Strut, here are a few moves that can get your heart rate racing before your legs do (and no prior dance experience is needed.):

Wobble

“Wobble baby, wobble baby, wobble baby…” The lyrics of the appropriately titled “Wobble” by V.I.C. make this dance pretty straightforward. It’s all about the wobble. We like this one for the full-body movement encouraged in this head-to-toe, side-to-side shakeout. Listen to the words and you’ll know what to do. And if you don’t know what to do, just keep wobbling. No one will notice.

Gangnam Style

This song took off like a racehorse in 2012 and it’s not slowing down as a great way to warm up pre-race. Whether you’re riding an invisible pony or throwing an imaginary lasso around your head, you’ll feel this one in your arms and legs. Just try standing still during this catchy pop tune. It’s not possible. Add your own style to Gangnam Style and you’ll be ready to run.

The Harlem Shake

For the seriously dancing-impaired, never fear, there is always the Harlem Shake. No special moves required for this one. The viral videos inspired by this song show costume-clad revelers shaking, jumping, and head-banging with reckless abandon. If you look ridiculous, you’re doing it right. Try to incorporate every muscle group in your Harlem shaking, and you will have the advantage on the racecourse.

No matter how you shake your tail feather, if you’re having fun you’ll be glad you participated in pre-race dance warm-up.  Register HERE so you won’t miss out on any of the fun!
